CD Studs, or Capacitor Discharge Weld Studs, are mainly used in sheet metal applications. Where a fabricator may drill a hole to insert a bolt for an attachment point, a CD Stud can be shot to the attachment side with no reverse side marking or bolt head. This leaves a clean and well finished look to the product with no compromise in quality or strength and achieves a significant time and cost savings. CD (capacitor discharge) stud welders utilize a capacitor storage system to produce a rapid electrical discharge, resulting in fast, high-integrity welds, even on thin-gauge materials. In contrast to arc welds, CD welds do not require ceramic ferrules or gas. The direct-current arc creates a shorter weld time, renders oxidation and heat concentration provided by ferrules and fluxes unnecessary.
